Jon Spring, 66, of Manlius died unexpectedly on Friday. Born in Syracuse, Jon was a graduate of Fayetteville-Manlius High School and attended Auburn Community College. Jon retired from the Village of Fayetteville DPW. He owned Pompey Lawn Service for over 30 years and was currently a bus aide to special needs children in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District. He was a member of the Oran Community Church and the Manlius Fire Department where he had served as DMO and ambulance driver. He was an Air Force Veteran of Vietnam. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Ellen Becker Spring; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher G. and Judy Spring; grandchildren, Jordan Michael and Maddison Rose; sister, Deborah Dammer; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Tim Fox; niece Katrina Fox; and great-niece, Kaitlynn. He was predeceased by his mother and step-father, Karoline and Ernest Pittman; father, Samuel G. Spring; and brother, Wallace Spring. I'm so sorry to hear this sad news. Randy was way too young.
My heart  and condolences go out to everyone, especially Debbie who I've known since kindergarten.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Clifford Randy Graham, aka 1-800-Randy, 65, of Manlius, passed away on Thursday at Francis House. He was born in Syracuse on May 11, 1948 and graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School. He served with the US Navy from 1968 to 1971. Randy was a supervisor for CSX for 33 years. He enjoyed NASCAR, his garage, and all his dear friends. Randy will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Deborah; a son, Christopher Graham of Manlius; his mother, Elizabeth Graham of Jamesville; a brother, Robin (Mary Lynn) Graham of Chittenango; an aunt, uncle and several cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Clifford Graham in 2000. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Newell-Fay Manlius Chapel. I am so sorry to here this. I had lunch with Dick last year and he seemed to be doing fairly well at the time. He was such a nice person and so devoted to his family. This is very sad news.

It was not the best of Thanksgivings but we still keep going and give thanks that we are healthy. Thanks for letting us all know about Dick, he was a great fellow.

So sad to read in the Post Standard of the passing of Dick Shanahan. I remember him as a real nice guy, always in a good mood. It's hard to see so many of the people we knew from high school passing at such early ages. It is nice to see that so many people have sent comments. I'm sure his children will appreciate to see how well their dad was remembered.

I have known Dick since before kindergarten and I know there are many Manlius "kids" especially the Manlius "walkers" from St. Anne's, who knew him even longer! Tom , John, Marty, Suzanne, Mike, Dave V, Wayne. It is quite a loss! And I don't know about you, but it's creepy that we are becoming the "older generation!"

Richard William Shanahan, 64, of Manlius, passed away on Saturday. He was a graduate of FM where he enjoyed playing baseball. Richard retired from the USPS in 1998. He enjoyed baseball and golf and had a passion for Corvettes. Richard was an Army Veteran having served in Vietnam. He was predeceased by his wife Maureen Spinella in 2010 as well as his parents William and Lora Shanahan.
Survivors: son Jesse Ryan and daughter Jenna Renee; cousin Sandy Cerimeli as well as many great friends.

Services: Noon on Tuesday at St. Anns Church. Burial will follow at Manlius Village Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 10:00 to Noon at the church, 104 Academy Street, Manlius.

I didn't know Sandy very well in high school. It came as quite a surprise when she contacted me and also Wayne Trivelpiece who lives out here as well. She said she had been coming to San Diego for some time and her brother, Ted owned a bar in town and would we like to get together. This was the start of a long and lasting friendship between us. We looked forward to getting together every time she came out here and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I was able to meet her and have lunch with her back in Syracuse in June. That was the last time I saw her

She will be greatly missed. She always seemed to light up the room and make everyone comfortable when we got together. I know she made my life more meaningful. The world will be a little colder without her.

I'm so sorry to hear about Paul's passing. We knew each other from the earliest grade school years on. He was a gentle bear of a guy. We were in the 4-H together as I recall and often were in the same classes and rode the same buses. In those days there was only one bus that took all us kids from the outlying areas to and from school.It was sometimes a very long ride.
I'm sorry and will miss a childhood friend.

Margaret came from a demanding family. When she did not win all the awards at our high school graduation that were expected by her family, they did not give her a graduation party. She changed her clothes and soon appeared at our picnic table, where my nine siblings were in charge of my graduation party. On hearing what had happened soon a cake was redecorated and everything that went with the celebration was shared by both of us. Margaret was always welcomed at the Zankowski home. She definitely enjoyed the hubbub of my family.

I only attended FM for two years and it was a great change for me. Bill arrived for the senior year and lived down the street from me. We became good friends quickly and he was interesting and a lot of fun. It happened that we planned to attend college in the same town and so there was anticipation of the fun to continue. His life ended abruptly prior to graduation in a swimming accident.

He was quite a remarkable person who could be a bit larger than life. He was well liked and well respected, and I still think of him quite often - he was a great addition to our class for a short period of time.

Patricia K. McAfee August 15, 2011 Patricia Katherine McAfee, 63, loving mother, close friend and strong woman passed away on Monday. Patricia received a BA from Trinity College, an MA from the Catholic University of America (1972) and an AA from Onondaga Community College (1989). She was an active member of the community, including the League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women, the Onondaga County Democratic Party, the founder and longtime leader of the Onondaga Survivors of Stroke. She is survived by her son, John (Debra) Jasen and grandsons, Ethan and Alex of Pasadena, MD; her brother, Thomas McAfee (Cheryl Phillips) of Rochester; her sister, Eileen (Peter) Schuchman of Binghamton, NY and her longtime friend, Richard Brown of Syracuse; and many others. Terry Anne vonSneidern June 18, 2011 Terry Anne vonSneidern, 62, of North Syracuse, NY and recently Camp Hill, PA, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Harrisburg Hospital. Terry was born in Ogdensburg, NY, on November 15, 1948, to the late Thelma G. and Carl J. Steenburg Jr. She was a longtime resident of Fayetteville, NY. She graduated from Vermont College and Albright College, worked as a teacher and social worker, and positively impacted many lives throughout her career. Terry continually strived to care for and support her family and friends, and will be missed dearly by all who knew her. Terry is survived by her daughter and son, Jennifer vonSneidern Haas and Lars von Sneidern; sister, Linda Coppernoll; grandson, Brian Haas, and companion, Michael Lester. Private inurnment services will be in Madrid, NY at the convenience of the family. David Milan

David and I were both children of "older" parents. He was my first boyfriend and I still have the little pin (two bears holding hands with sapphires for eyes - I am sure they were not sapphires but they were beautiful). Their "hands" were connected by a "diamond" rope. One of my most vivid memories of David was when he and I played circus in my basement. We had been rollerskating in the soon to be finished family room when we decided that we would play "knife thrower." I was the assistant - standing in front of the dart board and David was the Thrower. Imagine the horror when my father walked in on us - to his credit, he remained completely calm and suggested we might choose another circus act to emulate. Will always remember David's kindness and good nature.

February 27, 2009 Philip Hutchins Gott Sr., 61, of Cazenovia, passed away Friday. He was a lifelong resident of Cazenovia. Phil was a U.S. Marine, and a research and development engineer, formerly employed at Hollowick Inc. and Production Products. He was a devoted father and "Papa," an avid motorcyclist, loved dogs, rosebushes, physical fitness and was the ultimate "human encyclopedia." Phil is survived by daughters, Anne (Gott) Charron, husband Dave and daughter, MacKenzie of Clay, and Meg Nowak and daughter, Ava of Oneonta; son, Chris Gott, wife, Margo and daughter, Rebecca of Kirkville; son, Phil Gott Jr., daughter, Jacki and son, Nick of Cazenovia; and son, Mick Nowak, wife, Kim, and sons, Alex and Austin of Cazenovia. I would have missed the privilege of getting to know Margaret had it not been for Miss Conklin’s alphabetical seating. There was more about Margaret than met our eye--above all, humor, compassion, and ping pong prowess.

She attended Vassar and completed her Ph.D. at the University of Rochester while still in her early 20s (21, I think. She was a year younger than we were). She became a professor of philosophy at Tulane, Knox (IL), Otterbein (OH), and then Chairperson of the Philosophy Department at Sweet Briar (VA) for 22 years. All the while she was devoted to her disabled son.

Margaret died from an undiagnosed heart defect at the age of 54. Gardening was her passion, and there is a garden on the Sweet Briar campus in her memory.

DAVID MILAN, 60

David Joseph Milan, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away October 30, 2008 at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, Washington. David was born April 29, 1948 in Syracuse, New York to George and Barbara (Franz) Milan. He grew up and graduated from high school in upstate New York. After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in civil engineering the mountains and adventures called him west.He moved to Idaho and had two boys, Joseph David and Jesse Paquette. After several years spent back on the east coast, dad was able to make his way again to Boise where he held various public works positions and finally met the love of his life in Kristi Nivette. Not only were dad and Kristi soul mates, but they were each other's missing half. Dad had never been happier, and his gushing, exuberant demeanor was evident every time we spoke. In northern Idaho, Kristi introduced dad to his new favorite escape, Priest Lake. Never one to sit on the couch for long, dad kept himself busy enjoying his extended family in Coeur d'Alene, working on his BMW collection, riding his bike, backpacking, and enjoying the ski slopes of the Pacific Northwest. With dad's passing, the mountains will be a little bit lonelier, the ski slopes will have untracked powder for a bit longer, and those who knew and loved him will be a little bit emptier.He is survived by his wife, Kristi; sons, Joseph and Jesse; daughter-in-law Liesl; a brother, Michael; a sister, Constance; grandchildren, Esha and Elek; and extended family, Jonah, Jessica, Hannah, Jacob, and Alexandra Namson, Nick and Troy Nivette, and Amy Nivette. He was preceded in death by his parents.A memorial service will be 4:00 P.M. Monday, November 3, 2008 at the Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel.
